Housing blues? Build a den ...

FAMILIES are being given the chance to step off the property ladder for a couple of hours, go back to nature and learn how to build a den in the woods from branches, bush and twine.

Interest in bushcraft has never been higher and the Forestry Commission is staging its third Big Bank Holiday Den Build in Dalby Forest on May 26.

Rangers will be show how it is done in the 8,600-acre wood, near Pickering.

They will then sprinkle them with water to test their rain-proof qualities.

Recreation manager Katie Thorn said: "This year we want to make the Big Build a real family event. We've always had loads of eager kids coming along, but mums and dads enjoy den building just as much. It's a great way to learn more about the environment by working in harmony with nature."

Sessions take place between 10.30am and 12.30pm and 2pm and 4pm. The cost is 5 per person, or 15 for a family of four. Under-12s must be accompanied by an adult. Booking is required on 01751-472771.

Meet at the Haygate car park, just after the main forest entrance from Thornton Dale.
