A CABINET minister's talk on climate change proved a big hit with residents in Thirsk.
Hilary Benn, the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, was in the town to give the tenth anniversary Joan Maynard Memorial Lecture to 145 people last Friday on the impact of climate change.
The event was held to honour the work of Ms Maynard, a leading Labour figure who lived in Sowerby until her death in 1998.
Jonathan Roberts, Labour's prospective parliamentary candidate for Thirsk and Malton, organised the event.
He said: "The turnout was fantastic. It just goes to show how much people care about the environment.
"People want the chance to discuss the issues that concern them - that is why events like these are so important."
The event, in the town hall, raised more than £200 for the Thirsk Clock youth centre.
