A MULTI-million pound project to build a steam locomotive from scratch is nearing another milestone as blueprints used to construct Tornado prove useful.

Pledges to produce a boiler for the new Gresley class P2 No. 2007 Prince of Wales in Darlington have surpassed £400,000 leaving £200,000 to be found before a supplier is chosen by December.

The boiler for Prince of Wales uses a diagram of Tornado’s boiler and is interchangeable with it, according to the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust behind the build at Darlington Locomotive Works.

Mark Allatt, trustee and P2 project director at the trust, said: “The boiler is the beating heart of a steam locomotive and to keep the construction of No. 2007 Prince of Wales on schedule for completion before the end of 2021 we need to place the order for the boiler in June 2019 for delivery in January 2021.”

More than £2m has been spent on the project so far, with £2.4m raised and £3.1m pledged.
