HUNDREDS of householders across Darlington have registered their interest in a new garden waste collection service for the borough.

Residents have until Friday, October 26 to register for the ‘opt in’ service which will only go ahead if enough people are willing to sign up to pay for it.

A final decision on whether it is to go ahead will be made later this year. If enough people indicate they are will to sign up and pay a £35 annual fee to cover the running costs, the new service will be introduced in April next year.

Darlington does not have a service and residents currently dispose of garden waste either through home composting at the Household Waste Recycling Centre or by using the existing bulky waste collection service. More than 1,300 residents have used this service in the last two years.
