IF IT'S true, as Kirstie and Phil would have us believe, that 'location' should be at the top of every house hunter's list of priorities, then those looking for a home that allows them to get away from it all need look no further.

Gill Head, a grade II listed former farmhouse, enjoys a spectacular position high on the moor between Gunnerside and Askrigg, with striking views over this picturesque part of Swaledale. Despite its secluded location within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, however, it is within commuting distance of Richmond and Darlington, as well as in striking distance of the A1.

Its accommodation is no afterthought, either. Dating back to the 17th century, Gill Head has recently undergone a complete refurbishment to a very high standard.

Original features including a stone flagged floor throughout the ground floor, original oak beams, mullioned windows and a converted vaulted pottery accessed up stone steps have all been retained and seamlessly woven into the revamp.

Briefly, the ground floor accommodation comprises an entrance porch/boot room, sitting room with a cast iron stove, living room with a log burning stove in an inglenook stone surround, shower room with a marble floor, utility room houses and kitchen, with feature beams, a four-oven electric AGA, tulip wood handmade fitted wall and floor units with granite worktops and an oak-topped central island.

The first floor – accessed off the kitchen via an original stone staircase – is home to the family bathroom

with a sandstone floor and three bedrooms, two of which have the benefit of an open fire and log burning stove.

The pottery room, which has a log-burning stove and Belfast sink, can be accessed both from a bedroom and via its own external first-floor entrance, giving it potential to be used as a further bedroom.

All of the rooms on the first floor have feature wooden beams, with the master bedroom featuring an impressive vaulted ceiling. In addition to this, there is under floor heating throughout the ground floor and in the first floor bathroom.

Gill Head is complemented externally by an attached barn which has three bays with original sandstone stalls which were used in the calving scenes on All Creatures Great and Small. The other two bays have two former haylofts and the original pine stalls. There is also a former cart house and washhouse which, subject to obtaining the necessary planning consents, could be converted to join the main farmhouse.

A gravel drive with ample parking for several vehicles and delightful gravel patio with excellent views over the surrounding countryside completes the property.

Gill Head is on the market at offers in excess of £550,000.
