SINGER Sally Barker, whose career was given a fresh boost after appearing on the TV show The Voice, will perform live at The Hut in Goathland next month.

The singer last appeared in the area about eight years ago when she did an evening of Joni Mitchell songs at The Coliseum in Whitby which Musicport also presented.

Organiser Jim McLaughlin said: “I’ve followed Sally’s career over a lot of years, and have an original vinyl album of hers from the 1980s.

"People often are disparaging about TV shows like The Voice but in giving Sally that audience it reinvigorated her career which was struggling after the premature loss of her husband. Without The Voice one of the great voices of her generation could have been lost”

Sally began writing songs and performing at the age of ten, influenced by the likes of John Martyn, Janis Ian, Steeleye Span, Bonnie Raitt and Pentangle.

By her late teens she was performing folk and blues in pubs and folk clubs in the Midlands with bass player Chris Watson. Later the duo went on to support Steeleye Span, Gordon Giltrap and Roy Harper.

During her show on Saturday, September 1, she will sing her own songs plus a selection of covers. The support act is Kate Covell-Bullock from Mickleby near Whitby, who stunned the Musicport Festival crowd last October with a beautiful early morning set on the main stage.

Tickets cost £12. The show starts at 7.30pm start. Overnight camping costs £5 per pitch.
