CYCLING fans flocked to Stockton to watch some of the country’s finest athletes compete in the National Circuit Championships.
The race came as part of the Stockton Cycling Festival and crowds of people lined the streets to watch the cyclists race through the town on Friday.
Anna Henderson and Matt Gibson both claimed titles.
Ms Henderson, a 19-year-old Cycle Team OnForm rider, broke away in the early stages of the women’s race and never looked back on her way to claiming her maiden national title.
JLT Condor’s Mr Gibson won a sprint dual with defending champion Tom Pidcock to claim his first national title on the road.
After crossing the line, a thrilled and stunned Ms Henderson said: “It’s unbelievable. I have no words, to do it in this great town in front of all these people, it’s great!”
Jo Tindley took silver and Jess Roberts won bronze in the
Women’s race.
The Men’s race had a thrilling finale, with Mr Gibson pulling off a terrific move to overtake Team Wiggins rider Tom Pidcock to take the title.
Afterwards he said: “It’s my first national championships off the track. It’s great to pull it off and get a jersey I can wear for the year.”
Mr Pidcock had to settle for silver and Jon Mould finished third.
