MEMBERS of a new pro-Europe group will be visiting Northallerton for the first time today – when the public will be asked whether they back plans for a “Peoples Vote” on the Government’s final Brexit deal.

Volunteers from North Yorkshire for Europe will be setting up a "pavement poll" - and shoppers will be asked who they think should have the final say on whatever deal the Government negotiates with the European Union – politicians or the people.

The group claims that last month when a similar poll was staged in Harrogate there was overwhelming support for a second referendum.

One of the organisers, Richard Sadler, said: “However people voted in 2016 it’s now clear that the fantasy vision of Brexit touted by the Leave campaign is very different from the reality.

“There will be no money coming back to the NHS as it said on the side of the bus, companies with highly skilled workers are relocating to the Continent and the Government’s hard Brexit plans would have a huge impact on the lives of people in this region.”

Another of the organisers, Les Parkes, added: “Much of the lamb produced in North Yorkshire is exported to EU countries = so coming out of the EU is likely to have a major impact on the livelihoods of local farmers.”

North Yorkshire for Europe was formed in April in response to what it calls "public disquiet" over the Government’s hard Brexit plans. It has staged street stalls in towns across the county including Ripon, Harrogate, Ripon, Skipton, and Pateley Bridge.
