FILMING has been taking place for a new series of Sky Arts’ Landscape Artist of the Year – against the spectacular backdrop of Fountains Abbey.

The World Heritage Site near Ripon was chosen as the location for two of the heats as a “truly magical” spot for the artists and the cameras.

General manager Justin Scully said: “It’s really exciting to host a heat of such a popular and interesting programme.

“There’s a long history of artists visiting the estate and creating images of the landscape here, from Turner to Hockney.”

He added: “The money we raise from hosting filming onsite all goes back into looking after the grounds too.”

The series is the fourth to be made for Sky Arts by Storyvault Films and this year sees a new co-presenter alongside Joan Bakewell – actor and art-lover Stephen Mangan.

Ms Bakewell said: “It’s always fascinating to watch the artists grow and evolve their style throughout the programme and witness the incredible creativity in their interpretations of beautiful British landscapes – and to witness the debate amongst both the judges and viewers over which artist they believe to be the most worthy winner.”

Other locations used were Viking Bay, Broadstairs, and Inveraray Castle in Scotland.
