COMMUNITIES across the Ryedale district are being urged to apply for lottery funding for projects exploring the First World War.

The district is among just six per cent of local authority areas still to apply and secure funding since centenary commemorations began in 2014.

And with the anniversary concluding at the end of 2018 groups need to hurry to ensure they don’t miss out. Final applications will only be received up to January 2019.

So far, the Heritage Lottery Fund has invested almost £100m in more than 2,000 First World War centenary projects, large and small, but none has gone to Ryedale.

Local MP Kevin Hollinrake said: “Every Remembrance Sunday, when Ryedale communities gather around local war memorials, the impact of the First World War on our local area comes into sharp focus.

"But the role our community played in the war needs to be better understood and I urge people to apply for funding and ensure those diverse stories are shared as part of the centenary.”
