FINALISTS in Britain's biggest tourism awards to select the leading businesses in an industry which brings in over £8 billion for the region have been announced.

Judges in the prestigious White Rose Awards say their job has been made more difficult than ever because they had to choose from a record number of entries. Over 170 businesses, individuals and organisations from across Yorkshire were put forward. for the contest.

Organisers say the event is now regarded as the largest celebration of tourism in the country, with an increase of over 20 per cent in the number of entries on last year. There are seventeen categories and judges have shortlisted over 112 finalists.

Professor Colin Mellors, chair of the judges said the awards recognise the very best in the county's thriving tourism industry including pubs, restaurants, food and drink, hotels and caravan sites.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Harrogate Convention Centre on November 12. Prof Mellors added: "Winning a White Rose Award is a real accolade for Yorkshire's tourism businesses and the task of shortlisting has been harder than ever. The standard of entries has been exceptional which is evidenced by the strength of the shortlists. It is testimony to the remarkable range and quality of the region's tourism offer. With such tough competition selecting the winners this year is going to be extremely difficult.”

Sir Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: "The White Rose Awards are the largest and most prestigious in the UK’s hospitality and tourism industry and we have some really exciting finalists this year from both new and established businesses. The awards are a brilliant opportunity to shine the spotlight on the fantastic experiences to be had in Yorkshire."
