AN INDEPENDENT chair is being sought for a new domestic abuse scrutiny panel, which will review and improve the handling of domestic abuse cases in North Yorkshire.

The county's Police and Crime Commissioner, Julia Mulligan, is setting up the panel ensure cases are properly handled and that victims are supported and safeguarded.

It will particularly focus on the identification, investigation and prosecution of coercive and controlling behaviour offences and the support offered to the victims.

The commissioner’s office said the panel will aim to improve police performance, make recommendations to partners if necessary and aim to increase public confidence and encourage victims to come forward for support.

It will be made up of different individuals and agencies, led by the independent chair, who will work with the Police and Crime Commissioner to highlight good practice and make recommendations to the police and partner agencies.

Julia said: “Domestic abuse has far-reaching consequences for victims and their families, creating vulnerability in children, possibly over more than one generation.

“In North Yorkshire we need to be particularly aware of how this affects our rural communities that cannot easily access services. I look forward to working with the new Chair and panel to identify how we can improve the response here in North Yorkshire.”

The post is voluntary but expenses will be reimbursed.
