THE historic Walled Garden at Raby Castle, near Staindrop, County Durham, is now opening daily throughout the summer.

The gardens, which were designed by Thomas Wright in the 18th Century, have always opened in line with the Castle, which opens Wednesday to Sunday, but it will now be open daily from 9am for the first time this season.

Claire Jones, head of leisure development at Raby Estate said the move was part of a programme of changes designed to make the estate more accessible to visitors.

“We have already extended the opening hours of our tearooms and gift shop, which open every day from 9am, and we are delighted to now give visitors an opportunity to explore the park and gardens daily too,” she said. “Our aim is to encourage more regular visitors, particularly those living locally, and many are taking advantage of our annual pass which gives unlimited admission.”

Features include the East Garden herbaceous border designed by the dowager Lady Barnard, original yew hedges and a White Ischia Fig, which was brought to Raby by William Harry, then Lord Barnard, in 1786.

Tickets are not required for the tearooms and gift shop but park and gardens admission applies. Tickets can be purchased in the gift shop and are £7 for adults, £6 for concessions and £3 for children aged five to 15. Under fives are free. Annual passes cost £22 for adults and £10 for children 5-15. Concessions are £20.
