CHILDREN are set to enjoy free concerts from professional musicians as part of a festival education programme.

Swaledale Festival’s community and education programme has been steadily growing, and this year the festival is sending musicians to perform free concerts for hundreds of children in 13 Richmondshire schools and the residents of five local care homes.

The musicians, almost all of whom are also performing in regular concerts during this year’s festival, include violinist Emma Fisk, guitarists James Birkett, Alexandra Whittingham and James Girling, cellists Kristiana Ignatjeva and Rebecca Hepplewhite, percussionists Delia Stevens and Le Yu, viol player Susanna Pell, lutenist Jacob Heringman, flautist Meera Maharaja, and the popular Yorkshire folk duo The Hut People.

The Syrian musician Maya Youssef, who is a leading player of the 78-string Qanun and an experienced music educator, will conduct performance-workshops in secondary schools.

The aim of Swaledale Festival’s schools sessions is to give the opportunity to hear about musical styles and instruments they may not have encountered before including Middle-Eastern folk, European baroque, classical, South American tango, and American jazz.
