THE people of Thirsk are busy preparing for their first “Big Spring Clean”.

Residents, local businesses and organisations are being encouraged to join forces on March 18 to usher in a smart new look for spring.

Organised by town council in partnership with Hambleton District Council, the event will be led by six teams comprising the Thirsk Yarnbombers, Thirsk Town Council, Thirsk Cricket Club, Thirsk Community Library, Rotary Club of Thirsk and Thirsk Rotary in Bloom.

They are aiming to get the town ready not just for the new visitor season, but also for the visit of the Tour de Yorkshire on May 5.

“The visitor economy is vitally important to Thirsk,” said district council leader Cllr Mark Robson. “Visitors are choosy about the places they visit so we need to ensure that our historic town looks welcoming and inviting.”

It takes place from 10am to noon and residents and businesses are invited to meet at Thirsk Clock in the Market Place and join one of the teams. For more contact Thirsk Town Council on 01845-526445.
