AN OPTICIANS in North Yorkshire has raised more than £1,000 for charity which supports a little-known condition.

Specsavers in Northallerton raised the money for the charity Myaware, which supports those who suffer myasthenia gravis.

The team on the store on the High Street hosted a raft of raffles and collection boxes in store to raise the money.

It will go towards helping Myaware fund its support services for those who suffer the condition, and raise funds for specialist nurses, advisors and research.

Myasthenia gravis is a muscle weakening condition that often shows its first signs in the face, including droopy eyelids, double vision and difficulty making facial expressions, with around one in five people only being affected in the eye area.

Often these first signs are spotted by an optician, so the team at Specsavers in Northallerton urge anyone who thinks they might have cause for concern to head in for a test.

Ruth Sinclair, store director at Specsavers in Northallerton said: “We’re incredibly pleased to be able to support a charity doing such amazing things to support those with myasthenia, it’s such a rare and relatively little is often known about the condition.

“I’m very proud of the efforts of the team in store, and grateful to our customers for their generosity.”
