COUNCILLORS rejected controversial plans to build over two dozen bungalows for over 60s on a former buffer depot site.

The proposed development of 25 bungalows in Sowerby was refused by Hambleton District Council’s planning committee amid parking and safety concerns.

Premises with the large depot building have not been used since the foot and mouth disease outbreak in 2001.

Blue Oak Homes Ltd submitted the plans, but they were met with opposition from nearby residents as the number of parking proposed is below the North Yorkshire County Council design standards.

Sowerby Parish Council and the Highways Authority also opposed the development, believing Victoria Avenue is unsuitable for increased traffic.

This issue sparked safety fears for resident children.
