INDEPENDENT retailers are awaiting the launch of a shopping website which encourages people to buy local.
Thirsk businesses are backing the ‘ShopAppy.com’ scheme, founded by Yorkshire entrepreneur Jackie Mulligan.
The initiative, supported by Hambleton District Council, aims to bring local shops and products together online.
After success in nearby Northallerton and places further afield such as Ilkley and Saltaire, local traders were eager to sign up.
The scheme aims to preserve Britain’s high streets at a time when independent retailers are facing increasing competition from supermarkets and online shopping.
Councillor Peter Wilkinson, deputy leader of the council, said: “ShopAppy will make it even more convenient for customers, both residents and visitors, to access local shops and market stalls 24/7.
“Being able to see what products are available encourages people to pop into town and that is great for our community and our local economy.”
ShopAppy will launch in Thirsk on Monday (October 23).
