WORK to re-vamp a popular leisure centre is on schedule as customers eagerly await its reopening.

A £2.5m scheme to develop the council run facility in Northallerton will include a gym extension, toning studio and two studios for group exercise and spinning classes, and new, improved changing rooms.

Refurbishment of the sports hall and its changing rooms is complete and both have been re-opened.

Work on the pool and its changing village is underway.

Customers who wish to continue swimming have been encouraged to use the pools at Bedale, Stokesley or Thirsk.

Councillor Bridget Fortune, council portfolio holder, said: “Work is going forward at a pace now – we can see the new building taking shape which is very exciting.

“Throughout the work our customers are able to swim in one of our other pools – which has been working successfully.

“Once completed it will mean we can offer an improved programme of activities to help promote the health and well-being of people of all ages and levels of fitness.”
