A COUNCIL is to decorate its headquarters with a sea of poppies inside and out to mark Remembrance Day.

Richmondshire District Council officers are busy creating their own poppies to attach to netting which will then be draped around Mercury House in Richmond in a spectacular display.

Staff at the local authority are creating the symbolic flowers from wool, fabric, paper and other materials.

Once finished, they will be hung from netting will cover both the exterior and interior of the building ahead of Remembrance Day, on Saturday, November 11 and Remembrance Sunday.

“We wanted to create our own tribute for Remembrance Day and having seen how popular similar displays have been around the country decided we could do something too,” said council officer Jackie Allen.

“We have people knitting, crocheting and sewing poppies – as well as creating them from paper.

“They are being attached to netting, will be hung on railings and draped around the staircases.

“We hope our poppy walk will be spectacular.”
