THE country’s only combined jukebox and record shop has expanded for the third time in ten years as it capitalises on the boom in vinyl.

Betterdaze, which is also thought to be the UK’s only record-only jukebox hire firm, has expanded its Northallerton store as part of its third expansion in ten years.

By taking over a vacant shop next to its Zetland Street premises, owner Gary Lewis has created more space for customers looking for LPs and singles. The expansion has also created an enlarged jukebox showroom.

Now in its tenth year of trading, Betterdaze has seen an increase in the popularity of vinyl records and vintage jukeboxes, with a growing customer base of record collectors of all ages from around the country.

Gary said: “We started out first shop in Northallerton in 2010 with the smaller shop next door, but soon outgrew that and moved to the current store four years ago.

“Our stock of records, hi-fi equipment and jukeboxes has grown steadily since then, so when the former computer shop next door became available we jumped at the opportunity to expand once again.

“It’s a great time to be in business in Northallerton with so much happening in and around the town.”

Betterdaze has created a niche market by dealing only in vinyl-filled jukeboxes – there is a swear box in the store for anyone mentioning the letters of the alphabet between ‘B’ and ‘E’, and digital downloads get similarly short shrift.

Gary has seen a big increase in jukebox sales in particular, with the store attracting private customers from across the UK and Europe to choose from his selection of models and select records with which to fill them.

A jukebox hire service has also grown, with increased bookings for weddings and all types of events. Corporate bookings have increased, with regular contracts with TV and film companies, including promotional work for BBC One’s The Voice, theGoodwood Festival of Speed, and the Ambassador’s Ball at the American Embassy in London.

Rare vinyl singles and LPs on offer include an original Beatles ‘White Album’ for £700, a rare Nick Drake original at £400, plus an obscure single by 1960s band ‘Enough’s Enough’ at £800. In addition, the first floor is packed with thousands of 50p singles and £1 LPs.

The shop has several new features, including a coffee bar and more room for posters and accessories.
