MEMORIES 339 took a trip down memory drain – we do like old cast iron gully covers that have the names of local foundries on them.
Dick Graham also likes a good grate, and he was pleased recently to spot a Pease & Partners drain, cast at the Middlesbrough works, outside Richmond Cricket Club. It has a patent number on it – 236361 – which we can date to 1924.
Then Dick takes us into exciting new territory. He has just spotted a manhole cover at Raby Castle with “James Smart’s Patent Newcastle” cast on it. “There are several there, but it is the only place that I have ever seen them,” he says.
MAGNIFICENT MANHOLE: Only to be found at Raby Castle?
Can anyone tell us about Mr Smart, and do you have an interesting manhole cover in your area?
