RESCUE volunteers will be climbing the iconic Roseberry Topping peak from dawn to dusk to raise awareness of mental health issues.

Members of Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) will be climbing the hill, near the team’s base in Great Ayton, on Sunday, August 20 to highlight the organisation’s involvement in helping people with mental health issues.

A spokesman for the rescue team, Pete Mounsey, said: “So far this year, over a quarter of our callouts have been to help people who are classed by the police as vulnerable, suffering from depression or dementia.

“This is typical for mountain rescue teams throughout the country whose volunteers often have to find dementia sufferers who wander off and then don’t know where they are, and those suffering from depression who are frequently suicidal and choose remote areas in which to harm themselves.”

The memory walk has been organised by team member Mike Lincoln, who has arranged for the rescue team to have a presence on Roseberry Topping throughout the day on Sunday.

There will be a collection held for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Information on the rescue team will be on view in the carpark at Newton throughout the day.
