TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular Darlington businessman who has died following a battle with cancer.

Mike Airey, who was the manager of the town’s Handelsbanken, was well known in business circles as an astute banker of strong character.

Formerly a regional director for Barclays Bank, the much-loved family man was also an executive member of the One Darlington Partnership and supported good causes across the town as a Rotarian.

His death will leave Darlington’s business community shocked and saddened, according to former Northern Echo editor Peter Barron, who worked with Mr Airey to establish the Foundation for Jobs, an initiative dedicated to tackling youth unemployment.

Mr Barron said: “Mike was also involved with many community initiatives and was a key figure in Darlington.

“He was strong and calm and did not do anything for personal glory but because it was the right thing to do."

Prominent Darlington businessman Alasdair MacConachie said Mr Airey had helped the town's economic vibrancy to grow. He added: “He was an outstanding banker and terribly supportive to those of us who operate in a challenging sector.

"Mike will be remembered by us not just for his wisdom and talents but also for being a true gentleman and friend to many of us.”
