MORE “Friends of the Dales” are needed to protect one of Britain’s most inspiring but fragile landscapes.

The recruitment drive has been launched by an independent charity, which is stepping up its efforts to make sure the national park retains its special qualities for years to come.

The Yorkshire Dales Society has been campaigning to protect the landscape, wildlife, culture, historical features and communities of the area for 36 years, and encouraging people to value and enjoy this special area.

However now the society is changing its name to help raise awareness of what it does and to attract more members and supporters.

"We are changing our name to Friends of the Dales because it is more descriptive of who we are and what we do," said chairman Mark Corner.

"With the recent expansion in the area of the National Park, funding challenges and political uncertainties, there has never been a more critical need for an independent voice to challenge unbalanced or inappropriate policies or plans."

He added: "By becoming a Friend of the Dales, you can help us champion and protect the place we all love - or you can simply enjoy our busy programme of walks, talks and events."

Friends of the Dales also receive a quarterly magazine with a wide variety of features and articles.

Annual membership is open to individuals as well as businesses and organisations, and ranges from £23 to £35 per year. To find out more visit friendsofthedales.org.uk, email ann.shadrake@friendsofthedales.org.uk or call 01756-749400.
