LIFE-CHANGING surgery could help an “amazing, smiley little boy” to take his first steps unaided.

The parents of three-year-old Emil Mason say that their world fell apart when he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a baby.

Emil’s condition means that he is unable to stand or walk unaided and requires a walker to move around independently.

His family and friends are now embarking upon a series of fundraising activities as they attempt to raise £40,000 to cover the costs of surgery that could allow him to walk for the first time.

Parents Lindz and Helen Mason, from Darlington, say the operation is offered by the NHS but only as part of a self-funding programme.

The surgery – selective dorsal rhizotomy – involves cutting sensory nerves in the lower spine and reducing abnormal messages to the brain.

Mr and Mrs Mason believe it could give their son a new lease of life and help him to take his first steps unaided.

His father said: “It could give him a 60 to 80 per cent improvement in his mobility and the results of the operation can only be positive.

“Ever since day one, Emil has been in pain with his legs and this could also mean that that pain is disrupted and he stops having so many spasms.

“He could regain control of his muscles and have the ability to walk unaided – that’s the goal and we have every confidence he will do that.”

Mr Mason added: “I would give my right arm for this to happen for him, he is such an absolutely positive little guy and such a bright spark.

“Day to day activities are completely compromised but Emil is an amazing, smiley little boy who is extremely determined and wants to be involved in everything with family, friends and the dog.

“We are continually amazed at his positivity and resilience.”

Emil’s family are now working tirelessly to fund the operation and the intensive programme of physiotherapy that he must undergo following the surgery.

Fundraising activities arranged so far include a 10k a day for 10 days running challenge and a village fun day at Middleton St George taking place on Saturday, August 12.

Mr Mason said: “We would be so grateful for any support to help Emil gain the quality of life he deserves.”
