AN EIGHT-YEAR-OLD boy has been applauded for raising a thousand pounds for Cancer Research UK.

Callum Lane-Tingle, from Stockton, was inspired to get involved after his dad Andy was affected by cancer and required an operation last year.

He began making necklaces, earrings, bracelets and bookmarks “with lots of TLC”, selling the items at craft fairs and family fun days with the support of local businesses.

So far he has raised a thousand pounds and also plans to take part in the charity’s ‘Relay for Life’ event at Middlesbrough Sports Village on September 16 and 17.

The cash is being donated to the Tees Valley Cancer Research UK group and will fund the work of scientists in Newcastle who are researching cures and treatments for children and adults facing cancer in the North-East.

Janet Leafe, local fundraising manager for Teesside, said: “This is a great example of local people coming together to raise funds for research that is taking place right here, right now in our region.

“Every year about 14,700 people are diagnosed with cancer in the North-East. But thanks to the generosity of Cancer Research UK supporters, two out of four people diagnosed with cancer will now survive the disease.

“We can only continue this work with the help of our amazing supporters like the Lane-Tingle family.”

Callum said: “I decided I wanted to raise as much money as possible for Cancer Research to help find a cure for all types of cancers so other families don’t have to be unhappy.

“I am amazed by everyone’s support and with more events planned I hope to raise even more money.”
