DARLINGTON residents will have the opportunity to quiz the town’s election candidates on Thursday.

As with elections in the past, representatives from Darlington’s churches have worked together to organise a hustings event based around the theme of the “common good”.

Members of the Churches Together group met with some of the election candidates recently to hand over a paper prepared by the Christian community.

The MP hopefuls were given the opportunity to respond in writing to issues raised within the document and to attend the upcoming hustings, taking place at St Cuthbert’s Church Hall from 7pm on Thursday.

Churches Together hope the process will facilitate a positive engagement between the candidates and the electorate.

They also hope to encourage the candidates to explain to the electorate what inspires them to stand for Parliament and to help enable the electorate to decide who to vote for.

A statement said: “Although shaped by Christian reflection, this document is not intended to promote any particular faith agenda, nor is it a party political document.

“The aim throughout is to create the ‘thinking space’ for all of us, the people of Darlington, to think about how we may best work together towards the common good.”

The document asks a number of questions, relating to issues including Brexit, the economy and the Northern Powerhouse.
