A VOLUNTEER-run cinema is giving film fans another chance to catch award-winning films they may have missed first time round.

The Ritz Cinema in Thirsk is holding a fortnight-long mini-festival of films that triumphed at recent awards ceremonies.

Films to be shown during the ‘The Ones That Got Away’ event include the BAFTA-winning I, Daniel Blake directed by Ken Loach and the multiple Oscar winner Moonlight.

Ritz spokesman Marc Davies explained the motivation behind the festival.

He said: “We are often asked by people if we are getting films that have been brought to the public’s attention following the ceremonies.

“They are often surprised when we say we showed it a few weeks ago.

“We’re hoping this year we can help out by hosting a mini-festival of some of the winners.”

The films will all be shown in May, starting with I, Daniel Blake from May 5 to 7.

Next up is Manchester by the Sea which scooped a Golden Globe and a BAFTA and will be shown from May 8 to 11.

This is followed by Fences, the story of a working-class African-American father raising his family in the 1950s, while coming to terms with the events of his life.

This will be shown from May 12 to 15.

The triple Oscar-winning Moonlight, which chronicles the coming of age of a young black man growing up in a rough neighbourhood of Miami, will be the final film in the series, screened from May 15 to 18.

All films start at 7.30pm and seats cost £5, or £4 for concessions. More details are available at ritzcinema.co.uk
