COMMITTED runner Ian Hepworth is preparing to run his 23rd London Marathon – at the age of 69.

The retired pensioner, from Skeeby near Richmond, will be pounding the streets of the capital next month in aid for the national disability charity Sense.

As well as raising cash he hopes to raise awareness of the work the charity does supporting people who are deafblind, have sensory impairments or complex needs, to live full, independent lives.

Ian, who is a regular runner - he completed the Budapest Marathon last October - who runs all year round in the countryside near his home and hopes to finish this year’s race in less than 4hrs 15mins.

He has set himself a goal of £2,000 and so far has managed to collect over £650 for the charity through the generosity of family, friends and the local community, as well as raising funds at an open garden event at his home.

“I absolutely love the atmosphere of the London Marathon and I can’t wait to tackle it again this year,” said Ian.

“I’m almost always outside, running all year round, and often compete in Park Runs and other distance races.

“I’ve run the Marathon for Sense previously and chose to fundraise with them again this year, as the money that runners like me help to raise at the London Marathon is vital in allowing them to continue their fantastic work supporting people without hearing or sight.”

He added: “Even though I’ve run the course 22 times before, it’s still bound to be tough, which is why it’s a great motivation to know that with every step I’ll be helping to make a difference for children and adults with sensory impairments.”
