AMBITIOUS plans have been mooted to transform a disused quarry into a luxury holiday village in one of the biggest ever developments in the North York Moors National Park.

The multi-million pound Spaunton Hollow scheme would involve the creation of around 50 timeshare houses, cottages and apartments at the quarry at Spaunton, near Kirkbymoorside.

A central clubhouse with leisure and sports facilities and a spa are also part of the plans in an aim to replicate the Langdale Estate in The Lake District.

Details of the ambitious scheme have been revealed by the Lord of the Manor of Spaunton, George Winn-Darley and local architect Chris Carr who has master-minded the project.

Mr Carr said: “Our aim is to build an exciting new holiday destination to attract more tourists to the National Park.”

He added that the development will create 150 new jobs and said that the complex would be hidden away in the quarry’s hollow.

However, no planning application has yet been submitted and a spokesman for the North York Moors National Park Authority said such a major development would be unlikely to win its support.

He said: “We have not received a planning application for that site.

“We have been approached by the owner to ask for planning advice and we have said if we do get a planning application for that proposal we would support National Park policies which are in place to protect the National Park landscape.”
