A MARKET town’s police are asking people to be mindful of a busy road after a woman was knocked over yesterday.

Barnard Castle Police and paramedics rushed to the junction at Galgate and John Street, in Barnard Castle, where a 50-year-old woman had been knocked over by a car while trying to cross the road at about 1pm.

The woman suffered minor back injuries and was taken to hospital as a “cautionary measure” but has now been released and was said to be OK when the police spoke to her when she was back at home.

The driver of the silver Volvo, a man in his 80s, was unharmed.

The police confirmed he was not at fault.

PC Harry Marsh, of the Barnard Castle Police Neighbourhood Team, said the incident appears to have happened when the driver was turning right onto Galgate and the woman attempted to cross the road from the other side.

He said: “It would appear the lady has crossed the road without taking the necessary safety steps by looking either way.”

The woman was helped by shoppers and businesses who provided blankets and stayed with her until the ambulance arrived as she was unable to get up following the incident.

PC March added: “Perhaps this is an appropriate time just to warn pedestrians to make sure that when roads are busy that they are aware of the risks and use crossings where there’s a refuge in the middle.”
