AN ELDERLY woman has died after being trapped under a lorry in a horrific collision on Tuesday morning.

The 85-year-old woman was hit by the red tipper truck in Thirsk Road, Northallerton, as she walked past the library towards a roundabout close to the market town's High Street, just before 10am.

The woman, from Thirsk, sustained serious leg injuries and was rushed to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, where she sadly died later the same day.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue's Northallerton crew helped with the rescue and police closed the roundabout at East Road, Thirsk Road and Grammar School Lane, for several hours.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue had tweeted: "Northallerton crew dealing with serious road traffic collision on Thirsk Road involving a HGV."

Police are appealing for anyone who saw the woman or the red tipper truck with Thompsons livery on the side, prior to the incident, to contact them.

The woman was dressed in a three-quarter length purple coat, wearing a green fleece hat and was carrying a shopping bag.

Before the incident she was walking past Northallerton Library in the direction of the roundabout.

Police are also appealing to anyone who recognises the description of the woman to contact them, to assist with establishing the full identity of the woman.

The 51-year-old male driver of the lorry is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

No arrests have been made.

Police said they were alerted to the incident at around 10am by Yorkshire Ambulance Service.
