A FORMER pub landlord, who avoided jail for sexually assaulting a young woman, has been imprisoned after his original sentence was overturned at the Court of Appeal.

Andrew Campbell, from Scunthorpe, originally appeared at Teesside Crown Court back in November charged with assault by penetration where he received a 21 month sentence suspended for two years. He was also ordered to carry out to 160 hours of unpaid work.

Campbell used to run the Beckfields pub, in Ingleby Barwick, admitted lifting up the victim’s top and putting his hand down her trousers.

Yesterday, the Court of Appeal has increased his sentence to 32 months following a referral under the unduly lenient sentence scheme by the Solicitor General Robert Buckland QC MP.

Speaking after the hearing,he said: “The impact on victims of sexual assaults cannot be underestimated and it is essential these crimes are appropriately punished. Having considered the facts of this case, I felt that the sentence was unduly lenient and took the decision to refer it to the Court of Appeal.”
