PUPILS at Thirsk Community Primary School stepped back in time for the day for a taste of wartime childhood.

Year 5 and Year 6 classes dressed up in wartime clothing to enhance their history studies of the role of children in World War II.

The children dressed as evacuees, created evacuee labels, decided what to pack in their suitcases and took part in a simulated air raid.

They listened to Neville Chamberlin’s announcement the Britain was at war and considered the effect that this had on families.

The pupils also charted the involvement of other countries and identified them on maps of the time.

A school spokesman said: “The children also learnt about the effects of rationing and were surprised to discover how little people had to eat - especially sweets!”

Songs from the period were learnt in preparation for a visit to Eden Camp later this term.
