A GROUP of pupils acted out their school topic today (November 14) by hosting a mock wedding.

Children from Middleton-in-Teesdale Primary School's reception class looked every inch the part as they held the special service at the village's St Mary's Church.

Reverend Alison Wallbank help 'tie' the knot between four years olds Molly Thornton and Philip Robinson during the service which was witnessed by fellow pupils and parents.

Their teacher, Lauren Egglestone, said the children asked to host the wedding after learning about it in school and had used all their skills to pull it together with everything from designing the invites to making bridesmaid dresses and making their own flowers.

The community and local businesses also got involved by lending the group a Victorian dress and donating flowers.

"The children had a lovely time and really enjoyed it and it's just a great way to link with the church and learn about marriage," Ms Egglestone said. "We had a fantastic turn out from parents who then came back to school for a wedding breakfast of cake and lemonade and it was such a good way to engage parents with the children's learning."

Ms Egglestone said the service was particularly fitting for the new bride and groom too as Molly's parents were married in the same church while Philip's parents are due to be married next summer.

One parent added: "The children were so well behaved in church and they all took the wedding very seriously and acted out their parts very well - I am sure they will remember it for a long time."
