A GROUP of craft-loving women who knit charity woollen poppies are determined supplies will not run out this year.

As part of the Royal British Legion’s poppy appeal for the last two years the Leyburn Crafty Ladies have produced and sold knitted poppies. However demand for this must-have fashion accessory could not keep pace with supply.

For their first effort two years ago, they produced 100 poppies which quickly sold-out. An urgent appeal to the ladies to get knitting produced 100 more; however these all went by October. Last year they managed to create more than 250 of the knitted tributes but they still sold out ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

This year more than1,000 red crocheted poppies have been produced after members enlisted friends from York, Scarborough and Leeds. Sue Medley of the Crafty Ladies said: “All the money we raise goes to the Royal British Legion and although we ask for a donation of £1, most people give much more.”

The knitted woollen poppies will go on sale in House and Home Store, Leyburn, at the end of October.
