PEOPLE living in extra care housing schemes in North Yorkshire have been experiencing their own golden Olympic moments.

Broadacres Housing Association recently held its own 2016 Extra Care Olympics at its Town Close scheme in Stokesley.

The competition was as fierce as in Rio, with competing teams representing Town Close, The Orchards in Brompton and Rivendale in Northallerton.

Activities began with a 15-minute chair Zumba session to get the competitors warmed up before they moved into the garden for the main event, where games included bucket ball, long shot, penalty shootout and seated bowls.

Competitors won gold, silver and bronze medals for each event and there was also a team award, which was won by Northallerton’s Rivendale.

Once the games had finished competitors retired to the restaurant for afternoon tea where two cakes were cut - one for the Extra Care Olympics and one to celebrate Town Close’s 11th birthday.

Christine Foy, extra care co-ordinator at Town Close, said: “The weather was probably even warmer than in Rio but it didn’t stop the residents from putting in a fantastic effort.

“There were some great performances, and it was very competitive, but the main thing was everybody enjoyed themselves. We are now all looking forward to the next Extra Care Olympics at Rivendale in 2020.”
