A COUNCIL has vowed to stamp out benefit fraud after its most recent court success.

Hambleton District Council has won a case in which Caroline Painter, from Thirsk but now living in Thornaby, was found guilty of four offences of fraudulently claiming housing benefit and council tax reduction.

Ms Painter pleaded guilty at Northallerton Magistrates Court on Tuesday, August 2 for failing to inform Hambleton District Council that she had received an inheritance of £40,406 while claiming the benefits. She also pleaded guilty to giving false information on forms relating to these claims.

The defendant was given a community order for 12 months, during which time she will have to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work. She was also ordered to pay £250 as a contribution to the council’s legal costs and to pay £60 victims surcharge.

She is also responsible for repayment of the overpaid housing benefit of £3,646.26 and to repay the reduction she was granted through the council tax reduction scheme of £440.88
