AN ALLOTMENT site in Richmond has been re-named in honour of a popular town and district councillor.

The Robinson Allotments, formerly the Round Howe Allotments, were officially opened on Jul 16, in front of Richmond Town Councillors, allotment holders, and family and friends of Cllr John Robinson, who died earlier this year.

Richmond Mayor Cllr Russell Lord and Cllr Robinson's wife Kate cut the ribbon to open the site. Cllr Lord, a close friend of Cllr Robinson, said: "John always put himself out for others, both during his career in the fire service and as a councillor.

"He fought hard to get this place up and running and it's a pleasure to open it in his name, although I wish he was here."

Mrs Robinson said: "I can't say how delighted I am, he was always so keen to have allotments down here and it is such a lovely site with a nice atmosphere."

Richmond resident Keith Morton questioned why Cllr Robinson's full name was not used on the sign – but many others felt the name was still a fitting tribute.
