A PLAN has been unveiled to transform former farm buildings on the North York Moors into a leisure complex.

Belisa Spa and Gym has submitted an application to the national park's planning authority to create a health club and spa, including a swimming pool, steam and sauna rooms, gym and dance rooms, a restaurant and tea room, offices and stores.

The firm said it had been recognised that facilities at the complex off the A170 at Beck House Farm, near Cropton, were "much needed" to add to the tourism offer in the area.

The farm site has welcomed visitors to holiday cottages for the last 25 years.

While the centre would feature modern technology, including a biomass-fired heating system and solar panels, the firm said the character of the buildings' exterior would be retained.

A Belisa spokesman said: "The scheme will also provide a range of high-quality and long-term job opportunities for local people, encouraging them to stay in the area and help maintain sustainable rural communities.

"There is a well established network of tourism-base facilities in the vicinity, but nothing on a par with what is to be offered in the proposed conversion."

In response to the application, neighbours have raised concerns over increases in traffic and noise at the site.

The plan is set to be considered by members of the authority in the autumn.
