FARMERS and other residents are being warned of the dangers of dealing with cold-calling tarmac gangs.
The alert from North Yorkshire’s trading standards team follows the arrests of five men after a spate of incidents in the Whitby and Pickering areas.
The arrests were made after a number of complaints were received by trading standards and police from farmers in the area who had contracted with the gang to have tarmac works done on their drives and yards.
The complaints concerned misleading statements about the work to be undertaken and the price, and concerns regarding the behaviour of the men involved when payment was subsequently demanded.
The five arrested men are now on bail while the investigation continues.
Anyone who has any information about tarmac works being offered in the area or has had any works completed in the past month are urged to contact trading standards as soon as possible on 03454 040506 and request contact from the Investigations and Safeguarding Team.
