CHARGES are to be introduced for the collection of green waste in Hambleton, it has been confirmed.
The district council has ratified a local cabinet recommendation to bring in charges from April next year to help meet the council’s £1m saving target.
The council introduced a free garden waste collection service 12 years ago as part of a national government drive to boost recycling rates.
However the compulsory targets have since been removed - and there is increased pressure on local authority budgets to sustain core services.
It has led to a trend across the country to charge for green waste collections - a non-mandatory service – and five of the other seven authorities in North Yorkshire already charge.
The charges will be an annual voluntary subscription to be set in September.
