MARTIAL arts enthusiasts from across Darlington and the Wear Valley have raised more than £1,000 in a charity competition.

The Darlington-based Chung Do Kwan Taekwondo, which also has clubs in Weardale, and Teesdale have held a competition in aid of charity for the last four years.

This year’s beneficiaries were The Ellen Timney Foundation, who help sick and under privileged children in the area, and Stray Aid Dog Charity, based in Coxhoe, who re-home and care for stray dogs in County Durham.

They shared £1,200 raised by the Taekwondo competition held at the weekend.

Jane Morgan from The Ellen Timney Foundation said they were honoured to be one of the charities to be chosen.

She said: “We are hoping to support an autistic child soon but a lot of our funds go towards our Christmas gift appeal.

“Last year we gave gifts to over 500 local children who otherwise would receive nothing on Christmas day.”

She added: “I can assure you that every penny goes to the children.”

With the Olympics just around the corner, the club is keen for new starters to come and try the traditional martial art.

Families are more than welcome and free taster sessions are on offer at Haughton Education Village for all ages and abilities.
