A PROTEST against the country's vote to leave the EU will be held in York next weekend.

Although voters in the city chose to remain, the national vote saw a majority decide to leave the EU, in an historic event which led to the resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron.

The York Anti-Brexit Protest is being organised on Facebook by Sally Sadik, and will involve a peaceful protest in the city next Saturday, July 2.

She said: "It is our democratic right to protest, it is our democratic right to speak out when the consequences of this vote will be devastating, economically and socially.

"To segregate ourselves, to declare we don't want anything to do with the union that gave so much to Britain makes no sense. We have been lucky to receive so much talent and culture from immigration, they are the backbone of this country and work so hard to contribute to a society that wrongly accuses them as destroying British opportunities, rather than the actual perpetrators from government elite. This decision would be irreversible, and destroy so much of what I thought this country stood for."

The exact location of the protest has not yet been revealed, but it is expected to take place from 5pm.
