A SIMPLE service of remembrance has been held today (Friday, June 24) to honour late air force personnel.

The Teesdale Aviation Day commemorated RAF personnel from the area or those who died in a crash over the Dale.

The Vintage Pipers set the scene before an opening address by co-founder of the annual event Tony Galley.

The service of commemoration was then led by the Reverend Canon Alec Harding and Barnard Castle School chaplain Rev Darren Moore before wreaths were laid by Town Mayor Cllr John Blissett, co-founder Cllr John Yarker and representatives from RAF Leeming, The Royal Air Forces Association and Barnard Castle School Cadet Force.

The service concluded with the raising of the standards and Last Reveille and the Piper's Laments.

Cllr Blissett said: "The service used to be held up at Deerbolt YOI but the memorial was moved down to the memorial gardens in the town, so this is the second year in Barnard Castle and the 21st year of the service.

"It is important to remember all those who gave their time and lives in service with the RAF, I'm ex-military myself so understand the importance of remembering them and the families that are still with us."
