A LOCAL authority flew the flag proudly as its made its own contribution to National Armed Forces Day.

The chairman of Richmondshire District Council ,Cllr Tony Duff, led officials from the authority, along with forces personnel, in a ceremony to raise a special flag in the Friary Gardens in Richmond.

And as it fluttered in the wind, four jets performed a spectacular fly past as the RAF’s tribute to the day.

Cllr Duff gave the initial address and Lieutenant Colonel Mark Steed, the commander of Catterick Garrison replied on behalf of the armed forces. They were joined by veterans, civic leaders, councillors, and local schoolchildren from Military Kids Club Heroes as well as forces personnel from the Army, Navy and the RAF.

In his tribute to all servicemen and women Cllr Duff said: “It is so important that our Armed Forces, both past and present, are shown support and gratitude for the huge personal sacrifices they have made - and continue to make- for our country,.”

He added: “To have so many people represented at the ceremony, both present and past military personnel, made the event very special for us all.”
