THE future of a Grade II listed building is to be discussed by local residents after the distinctive town hall was bought by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.

Two community events have been organised in Guisborough by the local authority to ensure that residents have a say in the future use of the three-storey building, which was previously used as offices and was owned by a pub company.

Last year, the council bought the building for £70,000 in auction and is now calling on people to pop into the consultation events to have an input.

Councillor Dale Quigley, cabinet member for economic growth, said: “This consultation provides the local community with the opportunity to feedback their ideas and suggestions on the future of the building whilst providing an understanding of what is realistically achievable.

“We value the views of local people so please share your thoughts with us.”

And the move was welcomed by Cllr Valerie Halton, who represents the town on the council: she said: “I lobbied the Borough Council for a long time to buy Guisborough Town Hall, so am particularly pleased that they agreed. However, the Council does not have a use for it and is not in a position to fund repairs and maintenance.

“Community ownership could help the town to thrive and so we need volunteers to establish a community asset which is capable of self-sustainability. There will be a need to generate a profit which can be reinvested into activities that benefit the community.

“Many people have complained about the state of disrepair and there is now the opportunity for them to help develop a plan for its future use.

“This will require lots of time, commitment and dedication; it is going to be a difficult task.”

The events will be taking place on Monday, June 20 between 3pm and 7pm and Tuesday 21 between 3pm and 6pm.

Following the consultation, a workshop will take place in July to present the findings to the public and a report prepared with possible options for the development of the building.

Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland MP, Tom Blenkinsop, said: “This is a welcome step. This is an iconic listed building which dominates the Market Place, and has been sadly neglected by past owners. Conscious of local feeling it was finally purchased at auction by the council last year.”

Anyone who would like to have their say can attend one of the events or visit www.redcar-cleveland.gov.uk/guisboroughtownhall to complete the consultation.
