A VILLAGE nursery has been rated outstanding for the second time in a row.

Kirkby and Great Broughton Nursery, based at Kirkby and Great Broughton CE Primary School, in Kirkby-in-Cleveland was rated outstanding in all areas in its Ofsted inspection, including management, quality of teaching and learning, personal development and welfare and outcomes for children.

It is the second outstanding rating for the nursery, which obtained its first one in 2010.

Owner Wendy Kelly started the nursery in 2005 and runs it with her deputy Sandra Burgess and the two have worked together for the past 15 years. After starting out in the village hall, it is now based in a Portakabin within the grounds of the school.

Mrs Kelly is a former teacher and also teaches yoga and often uses yoga techniques such as breathing exercises and mindfulness with the children.

The Ofsted report noted: “Children show superb levels of confidence and demonstrate an immensely positive attitude to learning.

“They concentrate for extended periods of time and do not become distracted from tasks and activities. For example, as parents arrive to collect them, children remain absorbed in a group story time and do not want to leave. All children make rapid progress and many are exceeding the levels of development typical for their age.”

Mrs Kelly said: “We received an outstanding rating in 2010, which was fantastic. Now Ofsted have a new schedule and we never thought with the change of schedule we would get another outstanding.

“I think the focus here is the personal, social and emotional aspects for the children and moving them on for school.”
