THE National Council of Women of Great Britain has backed The Northern Echo’s campaign to Save Crown Street Library.

The historic organisation’s national president, regional chairman and branch chairman co-signed a letter urging Darlington Borough Council to protect the town’s library services.

A programme of controversial budget cuts could see Darlington’s historic Crown Street Library close its doors forever, with most of its resources moved into the Dolphin Centre.

Cockerton Library and the town’s mobile library would also close permanently.

The impassioned letter, sent from the NCWGB’s headquarters in Darlington, said: “NCWGB have many policies which have been taken forward for discussion with Government.

“Supporting our heritage is fundamental to these concerns and a very important one.

“The news of the possible closure in Darlington is therefore disturbing and disappointing to NCW nationally and regionally.”

The organisation – which has worked to give a voice to women for more than 120 years – will hold its national conference in Darlington this year.

The letter added: “We know other organisations are holding important gatherings in Darlington and if we continue to lose our heritage, clearly evident in our buildings, what will be left to attract people to the town?

“The gracious architecture of the library building and the amenities it offers is part of our heritage, which is there for all who live here and for all who visit to enjoy.

“Our heritage should be respected, supported and protected.

“It is time for the council to listen and work with residents to find other ways to secure Darlington’s finances without damaging our heritage and educational amenities.”
